Relocating to Minneapolis, need to be somewhat near the 3 medical centers U Minn/St Paul, VA hospital, if at all possible. Which side of town or where would be a safe area to look for an apartment ? Or as a secondary option are there an easy commutes in from a suburb ? if so how long of a drive ?
Relocating area suggestions
can you clarify which three medical centers? Do you mean those medical centers in addition to the VA hospital?
Relocating area suggestions
Definitely U Minn/St Paul and VA
I don%26#39;t know of a University of MN Medical Center in St. Paul. I assume you mean the medical center (where my wife works) on the U of Minn campus (Harvard Street) in Minneapolis (close to St. Paul).
And the VA hospital in south Minneapolis.
Some people have a preference for suburbs. Not sure if you do. But I would suggest checking out apartments in south Minneapolis. Near the light rail line. the VA hospital is along the light rail line and you could drive to the UM Med Center. They%26#39;re not that far apart.
I live in Minneapolis%26#39; Longfellow neighborhood. I have very good access to both. My wife bikes to work.
I can%26#39;t tell you much about the apartment selections around here, but there are places adertised a LOT along the light rail (wakling distance).
Thanks yes you%26#39;re correct on the locations, so sounds like South would be best, Any general areas to stay away from ?
If being in the city is fine with you (as I said, some prefer the suburban life to city) then I%26#39;d say stay in walking distance of the light rail (where there seem to be a good contration of apartments) and near or south of the 46th Street Station. I live north of that station and my neighborhood is safe. But the next station up is 38th Street and I think that%26#39;s the point at which the safety level declines a bit. I would avoid the Lake Street area and Franklin.
Please keep in mind I don%26#39;t know what a good neghborhood is to you other than safe. Do you need certain things nearby -- bars, restaurants, shops, etc.
Sounds silly, but for peace of mind, I%26#39;d stay away from the flight patterns out of msp, assuming you can get straight answers on what and where exactly they are in reference to suburbs south of the airport.

wrong button, late in the day, sorry

Longfellow is not under any flight patterns, fwiw.
I should say that many other areas of Minneapolis would work too. But what brought that area to mind was that it%26#39;s between the two hospitals, shortening the commute and making the train an option for the VA hospital.
It really depends on what kind of neighborhood you%26#39;re seeking. family friendly residential, hip and trendy, nightlife possibilities, etc etc
One of my co-workers relocated to Minneapolis, from Boston.
She looked at recently built condos that had gone up in the past 3 or 4 years in downtown Minneapolis, and sought for-rent-by-owner units.
She got a really good deal at the SkyScape condos.
There are other buildings like it, that%26#39;s to the condo boom that started downtown 5 years ago.
You%26#39;d be close to the light rail line, that would run you to airport and VA center, and bus lines to St. Paul.
