Extending a vacation in the area

My husband, 3 year old son and I are going to a family reunion next July at the Arrowwood Resort in Alexandria. We%26#39;ll probably fly in through Minneapolis and we thought we could extend our trip.

I know that the Mall of America is in the area, but is there something else anyone would recommend within an hour or two drive away...another nice resort location maybe?

We%26#39;re from the east coast and know virtually nothing about the area.

Extending a vacation in the area

If you%26#39;re seeking nature, Grandview Lodge in Nisswa is a great place to visit. Just a beautiful, old-fashioned lodge with modern amenities also including a waterpark %26amp; spa. A little further east is Lake Mille Lacs if your family is into fishing, boating, outdoors with a state park on the southern border.

Minneapolis has a ton to do and I would plan a few days there also. Parks, museums, outdoor concerts %26amp; patios, farmer%26#39;s markets, shopping, grand meanders in great neighborhoods - there%26#39;s so much to do in the summer it%26#39;s hard to narrow down. If you%26#39;re around July 4th, Taste of MN occurs - outdoor festival featuring food, fireworks and free live stages on Harriet Island in St Paul. If you%26#39;re here later in the month, the Aquatennial occurs for 10 days with a cool night time parade, sandcastle contest, HUGE fireworks display and a plethora of other family friendly events.
