Had the opportunity to visit Savoy Pizza (downtown) after an approximate 2-year hiatus. Happy to report that the pizza is still very good, the restaurant is still just as dingy, and the tap beer selection is still pretty bad. Why more Twin Cities venues don%26#39;t have at least one Summit on tap is beyond me.
At any rate, if you will be in St Paul and want good pizza, the Savoy will fit the bill. Ditto Mamas

Ahh, heven%26#39;t been in about a year. I need to get back there. I usually hit up the Carbone%26#39;s on Randolph because it%26#39;s so close to me.
I%26#39;ve often wondered the same thing about the tap selection. Although once in a while, I find it quaint that they have such a crappy selection. I don%26#39;t know if that makes any sense.
When I need my Summit fix, I hit the Groveland Tap. It%26#39;s on my way home from work!

I love SAVOY !!
It%26#39;s one of the few things that will actually get me to go to St. Paul.
Carbones?...........gimme a break here.

Nothinig wrong with Carbone%26#39;s. Love it there. That said, it doesn%26#39;t compare to Red Savoy%26#39;s.
But it is less than a 5-minute drive to the Randolph location from my place in mpls/
Red%26#39;s is the best....sauasage and sauerkraut!!
mntoathens: If you%26#39;re looking for someplace with a great beer selection try the Blue Door in on Selby at Fairview - best Jucy Lucy%26#39;s on the east side of the river and a great beer menu. Be aware it%26#39;s tiny so tables are at a premium during peak hours.

Yep, been there, sully. Went there for a post-ceremony wedding adventure while the bride and groom had pix taken at the church at St. Thomas. Nice place. Will have to go another time to try the food, though.
That area is very close to me -- just across the river, and on my way home from work off Shepard Road.
I should have guessed you were all over it!
I have to plead ignorance regarding your area %26amp; would appreciate some help - Someday when you have time and are really bored. ;)
We bike a lot along East River Road-West River Parkway (and sometimes down to Minnehaha Falls too, but in that area I have more familiarity) and any suggestions not too far from the river and between Ford Parkway %26amp; the Marshall (Franklin) bridge in Mpls for a quick bite, drink, and/or ice cream cone would be awesome.
Thanks!
Well, of course there is Longfellow Grill (cousing to Highland Grill and Groveland Tap) on Lake Street side of the bridge in Minneapolis. It%26#39;s my second favorite in the group behind Groveland. Really good breakfast options there and one heck of a roasted pepper bloody mary. (they do have full liquor license unlike Highland Grill)
I would also urge you to stop for a beer (preferably before peak dinner hour) at Sea Salt at Minnehaha Park. Nice to be able to get some crispy fish and maybe a Po Boy and wash it down with a pint of Summitt or Surly in that setting -- out on the patio. It JUST opened Friday for the season. Gets pretty crowded and it%26#39;s a place where you order at the counter, find a table and they bring it to you. Very low-hassle/non-committal.
Surprised by how good the food is for a place that seems forced into an existing space.
For the most part Longfellow is residential. A few places here and there (Parkway pizza is OK and Rail Station food is good but I%26#39;m not crazy about the atmosphere -- but somehow they can serve booze and no other places in the area can get a full liquor license).
I%26#39;ll think more on it.
The other side of the river from me (SP) defintely has more options, which is why I%26#39;m always over there.
My favorite place near me isn%26#39;t super close and would be off your bike circuit. Schooner Tavern in the Rainbow Foods plaza on Lake Street and Minnehaha. Not the prettiest setting but the place is a true original. Worth a stop.
Actually, totally slipped my mind. Second to the Schooner for me and somewhat close to the bike circuit you%26#39;re on (42nd Ave and 38th St) -- very do-able and bike rack available -- is Riverview Wine Bar. (kiddie corner from Riverview Theater)
You don%26#39;t have to drink wine and it%26#39;s not a snooty spot. Try early evening before the people who dress up get there if you don%26#39;t want to feel underdressed. But I go there and sit on the patio in the summer and sip from a wild beer list -- Left Hand Porter is my fave on the list right now. You wouldn%26#39;t think to look at it but you can get some great beer there -- and of course a stellar wine list.
The pizzas are fantastic -- thin crust, Italian style. Olive oiled-crust. Try the Stephano.
I like the place and the feel of it. The ownership is fantastic. Very good service. Guy poured me a glass of wine that ended below the usual pour line and ran out so he gave me the glass free. Can%26#39;t go wrong w/ that!
