Romantic getaways within driving distance of Minneapolis

My husband and I are looking for a romantic getaway that would be nice in late march. He will be home on leave so we don%26#39;t have much time and would like to drive there in one day. Suggestions for affordable places in Minnesota and neighboring states would be greatly appreciated.

I would look into Red Wing, Grand Marais, Duluth, Madeline Island. All wonderful places!

It depends on what you think is romantic and affordable. If you like the outdoors, the only place up north where you%26#39;re pretty much guaranteed sparkly snow in late March is the Gunflint Trail, where you get discounts in late March; try Bearskin Lodge or Gunflint Lodge, which have fine dining, or stay at Poplar Creek B%26amp;B and eat at the nearby Trail Center. You can get a free sleigh ride if you stay midweek. The North Shore might be as gray and slushy as the rest of this region in late March, but you could rent a private cottage from Cascade Vacation Rentals, VRBO or HomeAway (ask for a good deal, especially midweek).

I like to go to Missouri in late March -- it can be gray and chilly, but also it can be 70 and sunny, with forsythia, hawthorne and daffodils blooming everywhere. Kansas City is seven hours; you could stay at the Southmoreland B%26amp;B or Raphael, eat barbecue and listen to blues. There%26#39;s a little village to the northwest called Weston that has B%26amp;Bs, a distillery, a winery and lots of Civil War history. To the east, you could ride the Katy Trail. If you don%26#39;t mind more driving, you could explore the Ozark byways farther south and paddle the rivers around Eminence. It%26#39;s not expensive and it%26#39;ll be quiet; I like the old-fashioned Wilderness Lodge near Lesterville, which has an outdoor hot tub and serves really good food. And in Missouri in spring, there%26#39;s a Plan B for rain: Tour one of the many show caves.

A lot of the usual Twin Cities getaways are pretty dead in late March. An exception would be Chicago. You can fly there pretty cheaply on Southwest, and you ought to be able to get a decent hotel rate. It%26#39;s as romantic as you want it to be.

Hope you have a relaxing time --

I can%26#39;t comment on the lodging suggested on the North Shore, but that%26#39;s the area I%26#39;d be looking at. Lake views in the cozy fireplace lodge setting, some with hot tubs for extra $$$. That%26#39;s a pretty nice drive too -- not just a drive you have to get out of the way to get to your destination. It%26#39;s a beautiful stretch of road -- either way you choose to get up there.

Personally I am not that opposed to the above post in terms of promoting (or self-promoting) a particular place but I suspect it violates the Community Guidelines in terms of solcitation. If it were a first hand description of a stay there from personal experience and had a link that might be one thing but this seems a bit across the line. While I am not going to flag it as inappropriate I will be curious to see how long it lasts before it is removed.

Another idea for romantic....there are a number of B%26amp;B%26#39;s around Spring Green, WI and (depending on seasonal open days/hours) a leisurely exploration of House on the Rock and their huge museum buldings might be fun. Or perhaps (depending on various school distrcit sping break weeks) a cozy place in the Dells area. Could be good off-season rates.

I just got back from a nice three-night stay with my wife at the Ellery House in Duluth. It%26#39;s an old Victorian home aimiing to represent the era of 1900 Duluth. Beautifully decorated, with bathrobes, complimentary port and sherry, working fireplaces in the rooms I peeked into, vintage decor. The Daisy%26#39;s Suite seems to be the most luxurious of the rooms -- has a sunporch and a nice bathroom.

A more modern option is Larsmont Cottages near Two Harbors. I have less experience (other than seeing their brochure and hearing raves from 5 friends who scolded me for not going there instead of Ellery house!) but they look gorgeous. What can i say? I like the vintage thing that Ellery provided. And those breakfasts beat anything I%26#39;ve ever heard of at a B and B.

Anyway, I%26#39;m a sucker for the north shore. I think it%26#39;s a wonderfully romantic place.

Duluth is maybe 2 hours, 20 minutes by car from Minneapolis -- unless you drive like I do then it%26#39;s 2 hours flat.

And Two Harbors is 20 miles or so farther north along beautiful Hwy 61.

Easy drive.

Unlikek Sequim88, I am opposed to shameless self promotion, and have reported it.

THANK YOU to your husband for what he does for us, and to you for supporting him. I hope that you have a perfect getaway.

I don%26#39;t know how this post escaped my eye... it might be too late to mention, but I%26#39;m always an advocate for Grand Marais and Sweetgrass Cove. IF SGC is booked (likely available mid-week) then maybe check out East Bay Suites, Nanabijou Lodge or Gunflint Lodge nearby. I hope you both have an enjoyable reunion, blessings.
