Skiing in Afton Alps in March?

Hello,

I%26#39;ll be in the Twin Cities area in March. Is it possible to ski in Afton Alps then, or is it too late?

Thanks!

Julian

It is definitely possible depending on the snow/temps. Check the website www.aftonalps.com to keep checking their status.

While the snow took a beating a couple weeks ago the latest snow and cold snap have helped. As long as there are several hours overnight with temps below 25F they can make quite a bit of snow. The average low does not get above freezing until the start of April. Your chances of them being open are very good, especially considering the current base of 36 to 60 inches.

Also, for this year in particular it looks like the weather pattern will shift to more moisture for the first week or two of March maybe providing some natural snow. One of the long range models has been pretty presistent in showing a fairly large snowfall around the 5th ot thr 8th of March. The downside is this model (GFS) is not super reliable in the 8-16 day range.

Thank you both for your replies. I am really excited about skiing and this is a perfect opportunity.

If you have a day or two to spare, have you considered heading up to Duluth or over to the Upper Peninsula? You%26#39;re likely to have more of a chance there, but it makes for a long day.

I hadn%26#39;t consider that option (didn%26#39;t know about it), but I%26#39;ll keep an eye on it. I can only spend a day, but the drive won%26#39;t be that bad from what I get out of google maps.

Also, do I need to have winter boots? This will be my first time skiing and I don%26#39;t know how it works.

Thanks to you all.

Duluth is a mear 2 hours away, so that%26#39;s very doable. Most places open between 9-10 a.m. and close at 4. Although, daylight savings time starts March 8, so they might stay open a little longer since it will be light. Regardless, you%26#39;d be back in town by early evening if you%26#39;d like.

I only suggest the UP because they get great lake effect snow and is ';relatively'; warm. It%26#39;s a longer drive though, 4 hours.

I would say if you have some sturdy hiking boots or shoes that time of year, you should be good. I wouldn%26#39;t recommend tennis shoes since it might be sloppy by then, you wouldn%26#39;t want to be wearing wet shoes.
