Where do MCAD students hang out?

My son (17) has an interview at MCAD on March 19 and we%26#39;ll be at a downtown hotel the evening of Weds, March 18. Are there any spots MCAD students congregate (other than a bar) where he might get an idea of what the student social life is like? He is crazy into the local indie rap scene and will be stopping by the Fifth Element store, but other than that we are unfamiliar with South Minneapolis. (We do know our way around downtown, though.)

I%26#39;m afraid I can%26#39;t help you there. And my coworker is an MCAD alum from 20+ years back before they even had coffeehouses! I did a search and did find this blog for MCAD: mcaddesignclub.blogspot.com... maybe you can post a question or find more on their website?

great suggestion! i will check out the link. thanks for taking the time to help.

You%26#39;re welcome, glad you%26#39;re coming to visit. I hear it%26#39;s an excellent school.

There is a 3D Film Festival at the Parker Theater while we are in town. I think we may check out the 9:15 of Dial M for Murder.

Does anyone recommend the attached mexican restaurant Pepito%26#39;s?

Hey Nashvillemom07

Pepito%26#39;s is a south Mpls local tradition, has VERY good food, and decent prices. If your not driving, try their margaritas, todo bien...if you want to try a great breakfast place south- Currans on Nicollet %26amp; 42 street... enjoy your stay..

Check out SpyHouse Coffee Shop on 24th and Nicolett. I always see students studying here.

Also if they are into Music - go to the Electric Fetus on Franklin and 4th ave

Also go venture down Lyndale between Franklin and Lake. There are wonderful coffee shops, 2nd-hand stores and the Wedge Co-op.

We just returned from our trip and Spyhouse was a good suggestion. There is one around Hennepin and 24th across from Fifth Element record store which was an important stop for my son. Eat Street in general was also rife with MCAD students. We had a good Mexican lunch at Pancho Villa%26#39;s. My favorite sushi restaurant anywhere is Koyi in the Warehouse District and we got great takeout and ate in our room so I didn%26#39;t have to miss LOST on Weds night.

For anyone checking out this post interested in MCAD, we had a fantastic visit there and my son really enjoyed his admissions interview. MCAD is not as ';polished'; or ';designy'; as other art schools we%26#39;ve visited like Columbia College or RISD, but it has a fantastic spirit of creativity. There were students getting down and dirty with their art everywhere we looked. Minneapolis is a wonderful city with the best of an urban center plus a safe, small-town vibe. The indie hip-hop music scene revolving around Rhymesayers www.rhymesayers.com adds another rich layer to the art vibe.

I am hoping my son picks MCAD so I have an excuse to visit more often!

funny.. i didn%26#39;t look at the post dates. Glad you had a wonderful trip. Good luck

Glad you had a good time. Doubly glad you didn%26#39;t miss Lost!!

A glass of wine and ';Jim LaFleur'; were the perfect nightcap. :-) Thanks for all of your help! If anyone ever needs Nashville advice I am happy to assist!
