sky walk

I will be visiting soon and plan on walking the entire skywalk one day. Is this safe to do alone, during the day? I heard it can be confusing. Any maps? Any suggestions on where to start? I will be getting dropped off so I would need someplace where it will be easy for that as well.

Also, any suggestions for any other things to do during the day, alone, while my fiancee is at work? He can drop me off anywhere close to Minneapolis - he works in Edina. Please don%26#39;t mention the MOA - I have been there about 1/2 dozen times. Last time I just read a book at the Food Court most of my time there. Thanks again!!

Yes, walking the skyway system during the day is perfectly safe. You can start pretty much anywhere you choose. I think you may have a wrong impression of the skyway system; it doesn%26#39;t have a true beginning and end. The system is just a way to get from building to building without going outside, but you can%26#39;t necessarily access every building in the downtown area. To explain things a little more clearly, here is some more info:

minneapolis.org/page/鈥kyways-minneapolis.jsp

Scroll down on that page for a link to the skyway map.

Here is a somewhat tongue in cheek look at skyway etiquette:

A couple of thoughts of things to do during the day would include visiting the Mill City Museum. If you ever do finally move here, you%26#39;ll be that much up on your Minneapolis history, as the museum deals with the milling industry in Minneapolis:

Down the street from the Mill City Museum is the new Guthrie Theater. If you have any interest in theater, architecture, or both, you may enjoy a tour of the facility:

Or, depending on the day of the week, perhaps you would enjoy seeing a performance at the Guthrie:

Finally, if you have any interest in orchestral music, the Minnesota Orchestra has a concert at 11:00 a.m. on February 28, during your visit.

I%26#39;m sure you are aware of all the shopping available in downtown Minneapolis, but if you are tired of MOA, I am assuming you don%26#39;t really want to go shopping, which is why I suggested the above things. And I should think you could spend the better part of a day trying to navigate the entire skyway system.

Enjoy.

Three more things quickly come to mind:

The Walker Art Center is one of the finest collections of contemporary art in the country. A short cab ride from downtown, or you could have a short ride on the bus to get there:

There is also the Minneapolis Institute of Arts:

And the Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota, in a wonderful Frank Gehry building:

All three can be accessed on public transit:

Enjoy!

Would agree with everything listed.

Guthrie is beautiful and the productions are almost always top-class. Precede the show with light dinner at Cue (or 112 Eatery not TOO far away if you haven%26#39;t been there; but call now for reservations). Cue gives a nice view of the riverfront, but it is spendy (at least by my standards).

If it%26#39;s nice out, take a walk down to the Stone Arch Bridge for nice views of the city.

Thank you both! Great suggestions!

It will be a good way to get to know the Skyway.

I%26#39;ve been living / working downtown for 10 years, and there%26#39;s still a few routes I rarely or never get to on the skyway.

You%26#39;ll find some parts much more lively than others.

Maybe start at the very southern leg - the Hyatt Hotel, and snake your wall all the way to the big condo complex on the northern tip.

If you do it during a week day - say from 9 - 3, you should be fine.

How late is the Sky Walk open on Friday night? My daughter and a friend will be staying at the Hotel MSP and going to a concert at the Target Center. Is it safe for them at night?

A quick Google search brought up this page:

http://www.thedmna.org/infobook/skyway.html

which says generally skyways are open until 10PM. It does mention that skyways are owned by individual buildings in Minneapolis, therefore subject to the whims of each building, while the Downtown Minneapolis Council appears to have tried to get some generally uniform hours. You could go to www.minneapolis.org and contact the visitors association for more information on hours.

I suspect the skyways may seem a little quiet nearing the 10PM hour and thus a little ';forelorn';, but will generally be safe. If they travel after the 10PM hour, they would probably have to walk the streets. Traveling together, they probably won%26#39;t be unsafe, but alternately a taxi ride would be the minimum $5 ride in Minneapolis. It would depend on how much you want to save money or have the sense of security.
